your point on the iPhone is spot on. A LOT of tech reviews make no sense since viewers usually are interested in current improvements vs 2-3 years ago, and reviewers do compare with most recent model. this is even worse on Samsung where they will compare the autumn release with the spring release.
by doing this they ignore one of the most important part for the consumer which is to assess whether the phone will still be capable in 2 years time, something thay tech reviewers rarely experience since their job forces them to rotate phones almost monthly.
Yeah, it's a bit like car reviewers being obsessed with all kinds of things that don't matter to the vast majority of people who buy those cars, and being totally blasé about certain things because they spend all day driving supercars and high-end luxury cars.

Especially looking back how certain parts of career looked liek a dead end. though what i can't quite square, if he was such a dunce at the lower levels why was he so good at the upper levels of power. is it a case of lower levels its actually about external realities and the higher you get it is internal politics more.

That's a good question -- I don't know the answer to it.
There's also a chance that he just matured as he got older and had more experience.
