409: Interview with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Andy Jassy's Letter, ARM IPO, Google's TPUv4, HBO Max, and Video Game Development
"less visible chilling effects on countless projects"
What a man wishes, he will believe.
–Demosthenes
🕵️♂️🔑 My friend Jimmy Soni (✍️📚) has mentioned a few times, while discussing the research that he does for his books, how the people he reaches out to often tell him that nobody had asked them to tell their stories before.
It’s both great that he’s finding them, and sad to think of how many cool stories never get told.
In Shannon-Information terminology, it’s like he’s hunting for undiscovered information stranded on isolated islands, decaying as people forget and eventually die. By injecting this information into the big global interconnected pool of information, many more people can benefit from it.
And because ideas build on other ideas, you can never know what value can be unlocked by putting ideas out there.
If this is true:
If I read a book that cost me $20 and I get one good idea, I've gotten one of the greatest bargains of all time. –Tom Peters
And this:
There are answers worth billions of dollars in a $30 history book.
-Charlie Munger
Then it follows that some of the stories/information discovered by writers who do deep research and uncover things that others hadn’t found before may be worth quite a lot.
It’s strange to think about, and writers cannot know in the moment, but there’s a time when Jimmy or someone else was sitting down with someone and asking them about their experience, and at that moment an idea may be dug up that will be worth a billion dollars to a reader at some point in the future (or maybe it helps trigger a scientific or artistic breakthrough, depending on the topic).
🇨🇦🚫🙅🏻♀️ So Google Bard is still not available in Canada ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I know, I could try to access it via VPN, though I’m not sure if using my Google accounts associated with Canada would work with it, even from a US IP address 🤔
But my main point is that it’s kind of a slow rollout. ChatGPT will soon be banned in more countries than Bard is available in!
📺 So HBO Max changing its name to "Max" is 2023's Qwikster moment, right? 🤦♀️
How long until that decision gets reversed? ⏳
Ok, ok, maybe that’s not entirely fair.
I understand that HBO will still exist, and it’s just the top-level brand of the streaming service that is changing.
It’s probably a good idea to change it to protect the HBO brand from some of the low-quality stuff that is coming to the platform, but I can’t believe that they couldn’t come up with a less generic and uninspired brand than “Max”…
At least it’s not *offensively bad* like ‘Tronc’ 😬
