A correction on "world of Zero Trust", at least the way I see it. We don't hear of Chinese infrastructure getting hacked. That's because it's operated in intRAnet, separated from outside internet, not sure what that looks like inside and do not assume zero trust approach there as it would hinter surveillance capabilities in the opposite direction.

I would assume that they also use zero trust tech principles for security, and that we don't hear about hacks because it's a very opaque society with a lower level of transparency than in the West. I would guess they get hacked just as much as anywhere, there's plenty of traffic going in and out via VPNs, and even internal traffic is a huge enough pool of people to have plenty of security threats.

The old model of security is just outmoded. Having a castle and a moat and then allowing anyone who gets inside to move in any direction and do anything is just inherently less secure than assuming that every request is denied until you can prove that you have credentials to have access to what you're trying to do. It just requires a lot more compute to implement, but thanks to Moore's Law what was impossible 10 years ago is possible today.

Might very well be the case.

I suspect everybody is still mid-transition to more modern security, so some companies or government bodies may be pretty hardened, while others are still using old techniques, software, and equipment.

I suspect Russia and Iran are getting hacked a ton too, but we also don't hear too much about it. It's very hard to know what's going on in many places.

So I discovered that this post is breaking my RSS feed through Feedly :(.... Breaks on 2 local RSS readers.... Trying to investigate why.

Strange. I've had a problem in the Substack app, but it works in my RSS reader (NetNewsWire). Hopefully just a one-post fluke.. But let me know if you discover what could be going on. Thanks Steven!

So feedly converts the RSS to JSON, which the readers expect. Somehow it gets converted to invalid JSON (for most parsers anyway).

Looks like it's an emoticon, as I narrowed it down to:

🎨 🎭 Liberty Studio 👩‍🎨 \uD83C

"}

Between \uDC69‍ and \uD83C, there is a hidden character that breaks everything. You've used that emoticon before, so it's a bug on Feedly's or Substack's end with conversions. Probably Feedly.

Would be nice if you removed the emoticons there for this post only though :)

Could it be the scissors ✄ 🤔

I think it's the 👩‍🎨, as it's within the same tag and before the image.

A weird conversion bug in their library?

Can you check it if only breaks this one post for you, or every other post? I use that one every time I use the version of the section titles, which is about 3/4 of the time. Thank you for tracking this down!

Breaks my entire Feedly feed haha.

Literally can't sync my local RSS readers to my Feedly account with your feed in it. And can only access my RSS through the Feedly web browser.

I don't think it's directly related to 👩‍🎨. Your other posts are fine and I've followed you for a year+ now. Plus:

"Liberty’s Highlights is reader-supported. To support my work, consider becoming a free or paid supporter. 👩‍🎨"

has the same emoticon. Think you got unlucky and it tripped on the emoticon. Maybe due to compression and it's relationship to the other content? I don't know.

Just for this post, I think having " Liberty Studio" plainly for will work fine. And hope that Feedly fixes it on their end.

So with my phone's Safari, I noticed a strange character showing up at the spot.

https://imgur.com/a/vewZZmf

Maybe there is a hidden broken character. Can you try editing this post, deleting the title and image below it, and manually re-doing it? I can check whether it works or not.

I'd like to add your feed back to my Feedly, but this breaking my entire RSS collection won't do.

I'll edit it and re-save it right now. Not sure how fast the RSS feed gets updated -- hopefully that's instant. Thank you!

I just did it. I think it was the old film camera emoji that was borked for some reason ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Substack RSS updated properly. The Feedly side hasn't changed, see how their cache is like... Will let you know if it changes.

Thanks for updating it!

Great edition Liberty. I feel I may have had a hand in introducing you to Ethan C. from the Detroit Pizza issue as you appear to be going down that wonderful rabbit hole of food science enlightenment that I once did ( I'm still down here 🕳) 😂 If I didn't, then clearly "The Algorithm" has found collinearity between our internet identities and respective interests 🧠📺

Thanks Jake! Yes, I discovered him because of you -- he's great, really great. I mean, if I was a food youtuber, I'd want to be him. Thanks again! 💚 🥃

Looking forward to the day when you write an entire section about putting pickled onions on everything 😜

Haha!

That may no happen, as I tend not to like olives and pickles and things of the sort...

But who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
