Nuclear power, as you mention, is such a shame. The energy density is incredible, as is the potential for clean, near limitless energy. As I noted at Risk+Progress, overregulation due to misaligned fears of risk, is the core problem. We have regulated nuclear to death, as has much of the developed world.
I suppose we have an opportunity to redeem ourselves with fusion.
The problem is that fusion won't be different if the regulation doesn't change, and if the regulation changes, then fission has almost all the same benefits as fusion.. Catch 22 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
