Questlove and Black Thought started performing together in high school. They never thought The Roots would make it because their classmates were Boyz II Men, Christian McBride (best jazz bassist of his generation), Joey DeFrancesco (best jazz organist of his generation), and Kurt Rosenwinkel (best jazz guitarist of his generation)
Competition pushes greatness. I just listened to the Founders episode on Bruce Springsteen. Many ambitious people go to where the competition is to become better....others give in and let CATL lead them to where the customers are going;) You are correct, Ford would be rolling over in his grave at his company's recent capitulation. However, he also was the one who would never paint his car in other than black...
You made me look it up. Apparently the "any color as long as it's black" was only during a certain period in the middle of Model-T, peak standardization. They had more colors early on, and brought them back later. I don't suspect he would insist on it in today's market, haha
In the early struggle days when The Roots were trying to get traction, Questlove deliberated employed the scenius strategy to get the Philly hiphop/neosoul ecosystem off the ground. Founding members included Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Bilal, and Eve

It's impressive how these "scenius" emerge, with so many talented people all coming from the same area, same cohort, influencing each other.
