Interestingly, Quebec ranks fifth in the world if taken separately from the rest of Canada in the Happiness rankings

I heartily agree with the Project Hail Mary movie recommendation having also seen it yesterday. I also highly recommend the book which has so many extra interesting points to explore that had to be flooded over to fit it into a 2 hour film, especially if you have a reasonable level of scientific literacy.

***SPOILERS FOLLOW*** I don't have IMAX near me and watched it in on the normal big screen in English with Spanish subtitles (and fortunately Rocky's dialogue was always translated to audible English because finding a method of translation for Ryland Grace using his laptop was part of the plot). I loved the book and had hoped for a good movie and want disappointed. I thought the visualisation of Rocky's sense of echo location to visualise through sound was really well handled. I had forgotten some parts of the plot in the intervening years but felt it was extremely well adapted and told the story really well and captured most of the buddy movie feel. The final scene in the biodome was different to my memory of the book but worked quite well to briefly explain Ryland's life after the encounter and leave the viewer with something to imagine about how it might continue.

Glad you also liked it! I love sharing my excitement about these things with others. Films are so much better when they're a social event, which is why as much as I like the long tail of niches, it's also nice to have some big monoculture moments too (for example, I'm glad A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was that for a moment)

If you ever want to revisit the book, the audiobook is just *chef's kiss*. The way they execute Rocky's voice and the various musical tones really adds to it, and the narrator (Ray Porter) is the best in the business, IMO.

Great stuff. Why do you think there has been a brain drain from Canada to the US? From legacy media, it would appear the migration would be the opposite way in the times of Trump.

I don't think it's a short-term thing, and maybe it has slowed down recently, I don't know.

But generally, there's more opportunities in the U.S. than Canada if you're an entrepreneur/technologist/scientist/medical doctor/athelete/etc. For the same amount of effort and talent, you may be paid 2-10x in the U.S. vs Canada. So that's a pretty big incentive.

As Munger states, incentives explain 90% of what goes on in the world. Capitalism has its issues for sure, but it at least attempts to take people's selfishness and turn it into good results.

Yeah, absolutely. Sad to see the US moving away from those ideals lately (rule of law, meritocracy, etc)

And Canada!

Yes, in different ways, for sure.
