I definitely think consuming top tier art can embed "taste", as you said. Reading a powerful piece of writing, watching a great movie, and listening to a timeless song can leave a certain feeling in its wake that I think is some form of taste waiting to manifest...
Yes, and it's not so much about some "objective" taste to impress others, but more about developing your own potential to enjoy things and find things that you can truly, deeply love because they are so well-made, so layered, so exactly what your soul needs 💚 🥃
What’s interesting about taste is also trusting yourself. That sounds silly, but I think a lot of people will get that ‘real feedback’ you talk about and over or under index. Maybe someone else just has unrefined tastes, or different tastes. That can be quite a challenge to consider what’s real or not to refine your own, similar to AI averaging. And sometimes if the audience is only you (your clothes, furniture preferences), or larger (like Apple) that’ll change the weighting in the equation.
I’ve heard some people find great insight in the equivalent of mood boards. Just saving stuff down on an app like Obsidian in a “hey that’s neat” folder and seeing how it forms. I do want to try this out myself, you might just inspire me to
It's probably whole other post, but what I'm implying by taste here is that it's a personal, subjective thing, and used to better accomplish your goals. It doesn't mean others will agree with you or like the same things as you, but it's not because something is subjective and hard-to-define that it's not important. Clearly we all know some people with great taste and great judgement, even if they each do it in their own way and wouldn't agree on everything.
The biggest unlock is just going from not caring and not being curious about things to exploring and giving a crap. That leads to a much better place. I think we all know people who have lost that spark inside.
